KAROUN DAIRIES has an international across borders company history.

The origins of KAROUN DAIRY date back to the Great Depression.

The 18 years old Ohannes Baghdassarian, sole survivor of four brothers from the Armenian Genocide, saved his extended family members from extermination and settled in Aleppo (Syria) where he began his career as a money changer. He then moved to Beirut (Lebanon) where he acquired a seat in the Bourse of Beirut.

Ohannes had a successful carrier till the Great Depression hit all countries around the globe.

Encouraged by his client villagers, Ohannes Baghdassarian, a true lover of dairy products, established Cremerie Karoun in 1931, named later Laiterie Karoun. He appropriately chose as the company's name and trademark the Armenian word for springtime.

KAROUN became a pioneer in the Middle Eastern dairy industry.

In 1952, KAROUN DAIRY introduced pasteurization and began to home deliver fresh pasteurized milk in glass bottles in addition to distributing its other Karoun brand dairy products - all natural yogurts containing live active cultures, laban, labne, soft cheeses, yogurt drink, whip cream, different types cheeses, butter and dairy foods to hotels and restaurants in Beirut, and some retail stores in its neighborhood.
KAROUN owned also its retail store in the central district of Beirut specialized in Karoun brand dairy products, dairy foods and some other related products.

In 1963 the distribution system was entirely reorganized to cover the totality of Lebanon: its fleet of delivery vans distributed KAROUN brand dairy products and different types cheese exclusively to retailers, hotels and restaurants.

KAROUN Dairy was the first to introduce in Lebanon the one-way plastic containers in 1968 replacing the returnable glass bottles of fresh milk and drinking laban.

It was also a pioneer in introducing the round plastic cups replacing the jars of clay of all natural yogurts containing live active cultures.

The same year KAROUN DAIRY began to market for the first time in Lebanon all natural yogurts with real fruits containing live active cultures under the brand "YOFRUIT".

In 1971, Ara Baghdassarian the owner's son took over marketing and administration.

As demand for KAROUN brand products continued to exceed output despite several increases in capacity, it was decided to undertake yet another expansion: to transform the firm into a corporation and erect a new plant. Thus Ara Baghdassarian, Alice and Khatchik Khatchadourian founded KAROUN DAIRIES SAL (authorized on March 23, 1972).

KAROUN DAIRIES Co. is a practitioner of product innovation that relies heavily on benefit segmentation. It enters markets by introducing a new product with a new benefit rather than launching a me-too product. All KAROUN DAIRIES brand Karoun or sponsored brand products have different backgrounds.

In 1996, for the first time in Lebanon, KAROUN DAIRIES Co. introduced laban, labne yogurt cheese and yogurt drink in NO FAT- NO SALT varieties.

In 2007, KAROUN DAIRIES INC. Mediterranean cheese company registered in New Brunswick, began operations supplying Mediterranean cheeses to retailers in Canada. braided string cheese, Ackawi, Nabuls and different types specialty Mediterranean cheeses are produced in the traditional artisan Mediterranean way from first quality Canadian cow milk.

In 2008, KAROUN DAIRIES SAL licensed to, KARLACTI, Inc., a USA Mediterranean cheese company, the Karoun Dairies SAL logo, trade dress, processes and formulae.

KARLACTI brand products are now on the US market!

The Original KAROUN DAIRIES Company endorses all KARLACTI brand products which are under its constant supervision.

KARLACTI, Inc. is the exclusive licensee of KAROUN DAIRIES SAL in the USA.

Today, the Original KAROUN DAIRIES Company is well implanted in North America through its above mentioned licensees to supply the authentic Karoun Dairies Company customers dairy products and different types of cheeses produced in the most traditional way.
